Classless

I was asked by a fried if I thought we D&D would work as a Classless game. I said no - because I felt that it would change the whole feeling of the game - and that it wouldn't be D&D any more. However, after the idea had been rumbling around in the back of my head for a while, I thought there might be a way. Two approaches that I tried are shown below - The first tries to make all skills, feats and abilities available. The second is based on the 'Commoner' NPC class and lets you add elements from other classes.

I think that both have the potential to work, and pretty much keep a D&D like feeling to the game - but I can't really see me (or anyone else) using them. Both systems just make character design and leveling up more complicated, for little benefit. So after nearly three years of development work, they are 'on hold'. I might come back to them later - but I doubt it.
