The primary god of civilization, law, and trade, Abadar is the Master of the First Vault, the eternal storehouse in which is kept a perfect incarnation of every item and creature in existence. His primary desire is to see the purifying spread of civilization, enlightening the dark corners of the world and revealing the clockwork perfection of the cosmos. His nature is not hasty, for the pace of society’s reach is slow but relentless. He is the patron of diplomats, merchants, and travellers - for it is in peace and commerce that civilization truly flowers. He is not a warmonger, though he urges his followers to fight against the forces of barbarism. He does not favour good or evil, for both have their merits in his eyes, and if unchecked both can strangle civilization. He is stern but fair, giving no cause for any to complain of injustice. Abadar (and by extension his followers) believes that civilized competition elevates humanity. His alignment is lawful neutral.
The bulk of Abadar’s worshippers are not found in the adventuring class, but rather work as judges, lawyers, merchants, and all the other roles necessary for keeping society running smoothly. The colours of Abadar’s worshippers are gold and white, and they frequently carry golden keys at their belts or on golden chains around their necks.
When you worship Abadar, you honour civilization and its blessings. Your goal in life is to help society function smoothly and uplift those people that have none. Your religion demands that you be fair and just, and that you honour any reasonable laws of the society in which you find yourself. If those laws are corrupt, broken, or empty, then your honour depends on fixing them from within, not simply breaking them. Your life is about fullness and wealth, as well as promoting peace, understanding, and trade. You believe in seizing opportunity and creating it for others. When you see corruption, your most fervent desire is to fix it. Though you do not believe in handouts to the poor, you strive to create a society in which anyone can improve her station through hard work and honourable action.
The worship of Abadar is both functional and theological. You are not encouraged to feel compassion for those who break the rules. Devotees believe in improving their life and the world around them. They are willing to suffer small setbacks to ensure that the system works as intended, to forego dishonest gains, and to and believe in the fundamental tenets of commerce and competitive cooperation. Abadarans are encouraged to refrain from war against others of their faith and, more importantly, they are forbidden to accept or offer bribes or engage in public corruption.
There are two temples in Korvosa - The main temple serves as the Bank of Korvosa under Arch-Banker Daub Tuttle - not only do they look after money and finances, they seal and legitimise contracts of all sorts – marriage, business social etc etc. There is also a smaller shrine in the Pantheon, representing Abadar alongside all of the other deities recognised in Korvosa.
The Church of Abadar sponsors a number of organisations and activities to benefit the city overall, two of the most prominent are:
The White Watch is an informal militia designed to give followers a way of expressing Civic Involvement. It is open to all - race, gender and age are not relevant, it includes basic military training, but is more skewed towards calling out an alert or alarm rather than taking direct action.
The Vault Foundation is an institutional home dedicated to raising children of the faithful who have been orphaned. It isn't cuddly or loving, but it is serves regular ,meals and is both warm and clean. Children are taught discipline and are expected to carry out specified chores, duties and lessons. As the children get older they are introduced to the White Watch and are assigned minor temple duties such as cleaning acting as a guide and standing a watch or vigil.
