The Dorian Hammer-Fell thread. To be used for Dorian's development though the game.
Population of Korvosa = 90% human, 4% dwarf, 2% elf, 2% halfling, 1% half-elf, 1% other races. So Dwarves are the second largest racial group.
Janderhoff: The dwarves of Janderhoff quarry the dark surfaces of the Mindspin Mountains to extract prized black marble. They supplement this by mining veins of valuable ores, such as thick bands of dark magnetite (iron) and chalcocite (copper), a vast strand of silver, and a thin thread of mithral. Every pebble of black marble and every gram of silver the dwarves extract goes to Korvosa, while they openly sell goods they work from the iron and copper ores to whomever can afford their prices. The mithral they keep for themselves. Thanks to more than two centuries of trade and mutual protection, Janderhoff and Korvosa maintain a healthy and synergistic relationship. This trade partnership extends beyond the two cities, as Janderhoff acts as a middleman of sorts for Korvosa and the Shoanti of the Storval Rise. Because the two groups hate one another but also desperately wish to trade with one another, the dwarves act as intermediaries. While they charge only minimal fees for their services, the dwarves of Janderhoff continue to make steady profits.
Dwarves: The dwarves of Janderhoff frequently send massive convoys of wagons loaded with large slabs of black marble. Behind these marble wagons come carts filled with dwarven worked goods: metal and stone weapons, metal armors, tools of all kinds, and statuary. Because of their contracts with the city and the noble houses, the dwarves always have buyers lined up for their black marble. Once their contracted buyers choose the stone pieces they want, the dwarves sell the rest (if any remains) in Gold Market. The remainder of their goods, particularly their magical weapons and armors, they sell in the Dock Trade. Dwarven brokers exist in all of the city’s major markets. These brokers gladly relay requests back to Janderhoff for interested buyers, and once the desired goods come in the brokers contact the buyers to let them know.
This page contains basic information on Janderhoff
For a dwarf from Janderhoff, Dorian is unusual, not for him the heavy armour, picks and axes of his fellows his weapon of choice is a hand carved bow cut down for his stature. It was not his curious choice of weapon that caused his estrangement from his kin, that honour has claimed by one human, that Dorian met whilst accompanying his merchant father and kinsmen to Korvosa. The human provided the young dwarf with exotic and dangerous substances which soon caused him to forget his duty to his kin and clan. Refusing to return to Janderhoff with his family Dorian spent almost three years under the humans influence and once his coin ran out he would do anything for his next dose of narcotics.
It was not until Susanna a human addict he had met and befriended died to a tainted batch of the drugs that Dorian's dwarven constitution barely overcame that he hit rock bottom. Dorian sought help from the Temple of Ioari and was encouraged to subvert his cravings into a mastery of the bow. Feeling unworthy to return to his clan Dorian vowed to make amends for his failures and seek vengence on the human who he blamed for his fall and the death of his friend…
Picking up on, and running with, some of the ideas that were floating around on Saturday.
You could probably buy Zellara's old place for 3-4000 gp. I consists of one downstairs room, with a sleeping loft. Alternately - you could rent something like that close to The Old Fishery for 10-12gp a month. A single room somewhere close (say 15x15) would cost about 3-4gp a month.
A 'Market Stall' in the Market - ie a 15x15 area - with a suitable fire and servery would cost 5gp/month.
A town house in the market area - which includes living accommodation and a ground floor workshop suitable for running a business (including a take away, delivery service or a small restaurant) would cost 10000gp.
